Polygamy was never considered wrong in many African cultures – Okey Bakassi

Nigerian stand-up comedian and actor Okey Bakassi has ignited a lively discussion on relationships and marriage during an appearance on Nedu Wazobia’s Honest Brunch podcast.

In the episode, Bakassi shared his perspective on the traditional notion of monogamy, which is widely celebrated globally. He challenged its relevance to African society, asserting that monogamy is a Western construct.

“Monogamy is a Western idea,” Bakassi stated, explaining that polygamy has historically been the norm in many African cultures. “In our culture, polygamy was never considered wrong. It was the accepted way of life,” he said.

The comedian’s comments resonate with a broader global conversation on the intersection of tradition, culture, and modern relationships. He pointed out that while many African men publicly embrace monogamy, the reality is often more complex.

“Men might claim to accept monogamy, but the truth is far from simple. The challenges they face trying to conform to this model are undeniable,” he remarked. “We’ve been conditioned to follow this ideal, but it doesn’t always align with our realities.”

Bakassi advocated for polygamy as a more fitting arrangement for Africans, arguing that it reflects the continent’s cultural heritage and the intricacies of human relationships.

“Polygamy is practical for us,” he emphasized. “It aligns with how we’ve lived for generations and acknowledges the complexities of our relationships.”
