A video of Ghanaian rapper Edem passionately addressing fans who frequently ask him for money on social media has gone viral.
During a live social media interaction, Edem responded sharply to a fan seeking financial help to pay rent. Frustrated by the request, the rapper advised individuals struggling with high living costs in Accra to consider relocating to their villages, where housing and food are more accessible.
“If you can’t afford rent in Accra, go back to your village,” Edem said. “There’s free housing and food there. Stop putting your rent burden on others.”
Edem’s frustration didn’t end there. He also criticized fans who draw his portraits expecting payment, despite him never commissioning the artwork.
“Someone said, ‘I drew you, but you didn’t give me money.’ Did I ask for the drawing?” Edem questioned. “Do you know how many people draw me daily? If you appreciate me, do it without expecting money. I don’t even use the drawings for anything.”
Edem joins a growing list of celebrities, including actor and politician John Dumelo, who have pushed back against the increasing pressure from fans for financial support.
