US-based Ghanaian chef Sweet Adjeley has expressed her desire to see former President John Mahama return to the Jubilee House, citing his record on road infrastructure as the primary reason.
During an appearance on the Class Morning Show on Class 91.3 FM, host Prince Benjamin (PB) asked Sweet Adjeley which candidate she would like to see win power in Ghana this December. Having previously chosen Kamala Harris for the US elections due to safety concerns during Trump’s tenure, she pondered the weight of the question before responding.
“Geez!” she exclaimed, before finally stating, “I’d love that [President Mahama returns].”
She criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo’s handling of road maintenance since taking office in 2016, pointing out the deteriorating state of roads that were previously in good condition.
“Look, growing up in Ghana, our roads have never been this bad. Take the Barrier [towards] Tema [and] going. Nungua Barrier, for instance. That’s where I live. From this place [Labone] to my house, it used to [take] 20 minutes [but] now [it is] over an hour. They’ve been fixing that road for years. It’s an embarrassment,” she said.
Reflecting on her visit to Ghana during Mahama’s presidency, the award-winning YouTuber said, “The first time I came to Ghana when he [Mahama] was president, I was impressed.”
Sweet Adjeley made it clear that her endorsement was not influenced by any personal relationship with the former president or financial incentives. “I don’t know him. He doesn’t give me money. None of the people gives me money,” she emphasized.
The New Jersey-based medical officer lamented the current state of roads, noting, “Growing up in Ghana, the regular roads were good [while] the side roads have always been bad. But now there’s like a swimming pool in the middle of the road when it rains. I get anxiety when I am on the road, and it wasn’t like that for me before.”
Ghana is set to decide on a president, vice president, and parliamentary representatives on December 7. Former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, seeks a second term with Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his vice-presidential candidate. Meanwhile, Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia aims to keep the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power, with Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his vice-presidential candidate.
