The youth in Adzido, Vodza, Kedzi, Havedzi and the surrounding communities in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region and beyond have been encouraged to prioritise sports to promote peaceful coexistence and healthy living.
The move would also enable young athletes to create a spirit of tolerance and sportsmanship and build on their various talents and skills for a better future.
Mr Felix Apedo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Oly Sports Consult and Executive Member of Ghana Triathlon Federation, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, during this year’s Easter Triathlon Competition held at Adzido secret line, urged youths to brighten their future through sports.
“Some sports are considered as lesser known in Ghana, and l deemed it as an ignorance on our part because those are the sports events that are fetching a lot of money for individuals and other countries, we need to change our attitude,” he said.
He said sports such as triathlon, athletics, volleyball, bucket ball, beach soccer, beach volleyball, swimming, footvolley, canoe race, among others that were considered lesser-known sports in Ghana were highly prioritised in other foreign nations to generate much revenue for the success of youth.
Mr Apeto charged youths to always pursue their potential and develop strong desire and skills for various sporting events that could enable them to be successful and wealthy persons in future for positive impact on their communities.
“I thank Mr Kofi Adams, the current Sports and Recreation Minister, who pledged that equal attention would be paid to all forms of sporting activities in the country, and l hope the move would help youths to development talent and skills in various forms of sports.”
He explained that the country previously paid much attention on only football which could not fetch much revenue for the sporting industries and equal attention for all sports would promote brighter and successful future for youth in various aspects of sports.
Mr Apedo appealed to the government to as a matter of urgency organise trial competitions for youths in various sporting activities to unearth and hunt talent as well as promote and improve the development of sports in all communities in the country.
He also urged youth to be dedicated, discipline, and abide by the rules and regulations of the games and desist from drug addiction or abuse to help them stay longer in the sporting activities and appealed to parents and the public to play a major role that would support and encourage the athletes to gather courage, hope and strength for the sports.
The Adzido Easter triathlon competition featured 27 athletes with one female cyclist while swimmers covered 75 metres with cyclists and runners covering 75 and 10 kilometers’ respectively with the even been used as preparatory event for federation to prepare athletes ahead of other upcoming national events that would be announce later these years.
Some athletes GNA engaged expressed excitement over the competition and thanked the organisers for such successful events that have enabled them to gather more experience and learn new skills and rules of the sports.
The athletes received certificates, medals, packs of omo, diapers, among others from the national federation.
