Wenchi MP presents bicycles to school children in deprived communities

Some school children in the Wenchi Municipality who walked several distances from their respective villages to school have received bicycles to alleviate their plights.

They could not hide their joy, when Alhaji Seidu Haruna, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wenchi constituency presented 25 bicycles to them, expressing their deepest gratitude to the MP for the gesture.

Hitherto, the 25 beneficiaries, mostly girls, between the ages of 11 and 15 years, walked distances from Asuofiri, Bronoso and Ahwene farming villages to attend school at the Abotareye (M/A) Municipal Assembly Basic School.

Alhaji Haruna also presented quantities of dual desks to the Abotareye Municipal Assembly Basic School to facilitate effective teaching and learning.

Speaking at a short presentation ceremony at Abotareye, a farming community, the MP reaffirmed his commitment to improve infrastructure in basic schools in deprived communities.

He said distances should not in any way deny children accessing formal education and expressed the hope that with bicycles the problems of absenteeism, lateness and truancy among the school children would be addressed.

Alhaji Haruna advised the beneficiaries to remain punctual and learn hard to achieve high academic laurels and thereby build a better future for themselves and their families.

The MP explained that the presentation was in line with a project dubbed “the MP-One-Village-One-JHS Student-One-Bicycle”, he was implementing, ensuring that deserving needy and vulnerable children in the deprived communities received at least a bicycle to attend school.

Alhaji Haruna said he had prioritized education and pledged to collaborate with teachers, parents and stakeholders to ensure that all school-going age children access at least formal education.

Mr Patrick Arhin, the Headteacher of the Abotareye M/A Basic School, thanked the MP for the dual desks and appealed for support towards addressing the perennial water problem in the area and further appealed for new Kindergarten block and toilets facilities
