WAEC cites financial constraints for delay in releasing WASSCE results

The Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, has attributed the delay in releasing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results to financial challenges.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Kapi explained that the results remain unavailable due to unresolved financial obligations owed to technicians responsible for maintaining essential equipment used in the examination process.

“The results are not ready. We issued a statement earlier highlighting some of the challenges we are currently facing. Unfortunately, these challenges persist because we have not been able to secure the necessary funds to address them,” he stated.

A critical issue, according to Mr. Kapi, is the malfunctioning of specialised scanners essential for grading objective questions in the WASSCE. These scanners require immediate repairs, but technicians tasked with the repairs have suspended their services due to an outstanding debt of GH₵25 million owed by WAEC.

“We needed to repair our scanners because we owe the technicians GH₵25 million, and they have withdrawn their services until we make some financial commitments. While private schools pay their fees directly, the government covers the costs for candidates in public schools. Until these payments are made, we cannot release the results,” Mr. Kapi elaborated.

The situation has drawn the attention of the Minority in Parliament, who are calling for the Finance and Education Ministers to be summoned to address the government’s indebtedness to WAEC and resolve the impasse.
