Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, has joined thousands of cycling enthusiasts, sports lovers, and dignitaries at the Volta stretch of the ‘3FM Tour Du Ghana’ cycling event, adding colour and energy to the nationwide sporting activity.
The Minister was accompanied by Ms Sandra Seyram Kpedor, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Anloga, Mrs Victoria Amefadzi Doe, the DCE for South Tongu, as well as several Municipal and District Chief Executives (MCEs) from the region.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Gunu praised the organisers for choosing the Volta Region as a key destination in the tour, describing it as a boost to the region’s sports tourism ambitions.
“This event does not only promote healthy living but also markets our rich cultural and tourism assets to the rest of the country and beyond,” he said.
He encouraged the youth to actively participate in cycling and other sporting disciplines as a way of maintaining good health and creating economic opportunities through sports.
The women’s race commenced from Sogakope and spanned a demanding 142-kilometre route. After hours of intense competition under the scorching sun, Patience Effiong Otuodung crossed the finishing line first with resounding applause from the crowd and admiration from her competitors.
She received a cash prize of GHC 8,000, a brand-new bicycle, and a package of assorted products from the event sponsors.
The men’s category, which started from Central University in Accra, also drew massive participation with Solomon Tagoe emerging champion in the fiercely contested race, taking home a cash prize of GHC 10,000, a brand-new bicycle, and a package of assorted products from the event sponsors.
In a media interview after his victory, Tagoe expressed excitement and gratitude to the organizers for providing a platform to showcase cycling talents. “It’s a tough race, but moments like this remind us why we train hard. I dedicate this win to my team and supporters,” he stated.
The event also attracted several residents, market women, school children, and traditional authorities, who lined the streets of Sogakope and Anloga to cheer the cyclists as they sped past.
Mrs Victoria Amefadzi Doe, DCE for South Tongu, commended the safety measures put in place by the police and medical teams, noting that the exercise went smoothly without any major incident.
“This level of organisation shows how far we’ve come in hosting major sporting events,” she remarked.
3FM’s Tour Du Ghana has become one of the country’s leading annual cycling events, aimed at promoting fitness, unity, and tourism across various regions of Ghana.
The Volta Regional Coordinating Council pledged its continued support for the competition and assured stakeholders of the region’s readiness to host more national and international sporting events in the near future.
Organizers promised an even bigger and better event next year, hoping to include more routes and participants, as the sport continues to gain ground in Ghana’s sporting calendar.
