Unidentified man found dead at Agbogba after heavy rains

The body of an unidentified man was retrieved Monday from a drain near Transition at Agbogba in the Ga East Municipality, following Sunday’s torrential rains.

The three-hour downpour caused severe flooding in several parts of the capital.

The deceased, believed to be in his mid-50s, was allegedly swept away while riding a bicycle.

Mr. Dennis Mensah, Assemblyman for Agbogba Electoral Area, told the Ghana News Agency that the victim ignored warnings to stop during the rain.

He said community members attempted a rescue but failed, and his body was later discovered in the drain.

“Actually, they were two, but the other one survived. A private security officer was not lucky, and so we lost him,” Mr. Mensah confirmed.

His death brings to four the number of confirmed fatalities from the rains.

The other three occurred in Adentan Municipality, including Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon.

Mr. Mensah, shocked by the severity of the flooding, attributed it to construction on waterways, which obstruct water flow.

“Since I became an assemblyman, I’ve not witnessed this type of flood before. It used to come, but this one is too much,” he said.

As of 1530 hours Monday, GNA observed residents scooping water from their rooms and salvaging undamaged belongings.

Mr. John Kofi Dediha, a resident, blamed indiscriminate waste dumping for obstructing drainage.

He urged residents to act responsibly to prevent future floods.

Some residents appealed to the government to complete the storm drain construction at Happy Home to mitigate the problem.
