The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA), in collaboration with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), has outdoored a total of 75 community police and fire service assistants to work in the municipality.

The figure comprised 32 community police assistants, made up of 16 males and 16 females, while 39 fire service assistants, comprising 20 males and 19 females, were outdoored.

The assistants received three weeks’ training in their respective services.

Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, said the assistants were to augment the work of the police and the fire service due to inadequate personnel in the area.

Mr Totimeh said the assistants are not full-service personnel and therefore cautioned them against carrying themselves in town as such but should rather discharge their duties in accordance with their mandate.

“Those that we have employed as assistants are not fully police or fire officers; they should not therefore portray themselves as such. They have been given training and must work within those limits; they should not go about claiming positions that they don’t have”, he cautioned.

He added that the initiative does not only help augment the security personnel but also provide the youth with jobs, taking them off the street.

Mr Mohammed Judah, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), urged the assistants to always be in their respective uniforms and desist from rubbing shoulders with the security officials.

Mr Judah reminded them to use the opportunity to gain the needed experience to prepare them for future job openings in security agencies.

He said the fire assistants would conduct fire safety education for the public, while the community police assistants would help combat some crimes in the municipalities, adding that they would also be able to gather information on criminal activities within their locality for the police to act on.
