The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) has presented some items to the Tema Traditional Council in support of the 2025 celebration of the Homowo festival.
The festival, which means ‘hooting at hunger,’ is celebrated by the Ga people of the Greater Accra Region, with Tema commencing its celebration on Friday, August 01, 2025.
The items presented included gallons of palm oil, fish, alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, maize, bottled water, schnapps, cartons of fish, and an undisclosed amount of money.
Nii Amarh Somponu II, Tema Shipi, and Stool Secretary commended the TWMA for the gesture, stating, however, that the people of Tema need representation in the assembly.
Nii Somponu explained that Tema West was located in-between the Tema and Nungua Traditional Areas, adding that, chunks of Tema lands were within the Tema West Municipality; therefore, they must have a representative in the government appointees just like the people of Nungua have.
“Then, we don’t see why when there is traditional representation, Nungua will be considered, and we will not. Since it is an assembly serving dual townships, we must get a fair representation there,” he stressed.
Mr. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, responding to the request, urged the Tema Traditional Council to send a formal request for the assembly to consider and respond accordingly.
“In everything, we need to dialogue; we will come back to them. I will call on them, too, to make it official for us to respond appropriately. It’s not a bad call; it means they want to be part of the activities and want a stake in it. We will use official means to respond accordingly,” he said.
Touching on the presentation, he said that as officials operating within the traditional area, they could not watch the traditional people celebrate the Homowo without their contributions.
