Traders at the Akyem Oda timber market in the Eastern Region vandalized the local Forestry Commission office, alleging that commission workers were responsible for the death of a colleague, Kwame Asante (“Ashabee”). However, the Forestry Commission manageress, Madam Cynthia Okaine, denied the allegations, stating that Asante’s death was an accident caused by his own truck.
Asante’s Death
Asante died while transporting timber logs when his motorcycle was knocked off by the Kia vehicle carrying the logs, which was traveling at high speed to avoid Forestry Commission personnel.
Misinformation and Vandalism
The traders, believing the Forestry Commission was responsible, mobilized to take revenge, vandalizing the office. However, the military and police intervened, closing down the office and providing security.
Forestry Commission’s Response
Madam Okaine clarified that the commission’s personnel were not involved in Asante’s death and expressed concern over the misinformation and violence. The incident highlights tensions between the Forestry Commission and timber traders in the region.
