TikTok has announced that it will shut down its music streaming platform, TikTok Music, worldwide on November 28. Currently available in five countries—Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico—the service will end in these regions as part of TikTok’s strategic shift.
According to Music Business Worldwide, TikTok made this decision to focus its resources on its ‘Add to Music App’ feature. This feature allows TikTok users to save tracks they discover on the platform to playlists on their preferred music streaming services.
Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development, explained in a statement to MBW: “Our ‘Add to Music App’ feature has already enabled hundreds of millions of tracks saves to playlists on partner streaming services. We will be closing TikTok Music at the end of November to focus on driving greater music listening and value for artists, songwriters, and the industry.”
TikTok Music was officially launched in Indonesia and Brazil last summer, licensed by all three major music companies. It served as a successor to ByteDance’s Resso music platform. The app later expanded to Australia, Singapore, and Mexico in October 2023, though initially without Universal Music Group’s catalogue due to licensing disagreements, which have since been resolved.
TikTok’s ‘Add to Music App’ currently partners with Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon, offering users in over 180 countries seamless integration with these services.
