Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has taken a significant step in his spiritual journey, receiving baptism and a minister’s license at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in New York.
Archbishop Christopher Bryant announced the milestone on Facebook, stating, “We celebrate the addition of Minister Denzel Washington into the clergy, having received his minister’s license in the Church of God in Christ today, in a truly uplifting moment.”
During the ceremony, Washington shared a heartfelt reflection, recalling his late mother’s wisdom: “Man gives the award, God gives the reward,” a lesson she imparted after his multiple Academy Award nominations. He also recounted a prophecy from Ruth Green, a woman known for her spiritual gift, who told him at age 20 that he would “travel the world and preach to millions.”
“Fifty years later … if [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing he can’t do for you,” Washington said, inspiring the congregation with his testimony.
The actor expressed gratitude for his life’s blessings, including his 70 years of experiences and his “loving, faithful wife,” Pauletta, who joined him for the service. Concluding with a renewed commitment to his faith, Washington declared, “Anything and everything I can do, I will do for God.”
This latest chapter in Washington’s life honours his spiritual roots, as his father was a pastor in the Church of God in Christ.
