National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader John Dramani Mahama has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for inaugurating interchanges ahead of the December 7 elections, despite earlier accusations of using similar infrastructure projects for political gain during his administration.
Mahama noted that a 2016 social media post by NPP member Gabby Otchore-Darko, in which he urged voters to focus on the economy rather than building interchanges, was in strong opposition to the current government’s actions.
Otchore-Darko argued at the time that the focus should be on addressing economic challenges, not infrastructure projects aimed at garnering political support.
Mahama’s remarks came after the recent inauguration of several major road projects, including the Fiori Interchange and the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Phase II, by President Akufo-Addo.
These and other projects were launched in the final phase leading up to the 2024 elections. During his campaign stop in Bawaleshie as part of the last leg of his Greater Accra tour, Mahama expressed disappointment, saying that the NPP’s previous criticism of his administration over infrastructure development was now coming back to haunt them.
“How accurate are his words from eight years ago? So don’t let that distract you. These elections are about change, not about interchanges. These elections are about unemployment and economic hardship.
“These elections are the result of corrupt and incompetent leadership. It is clear that the NPP administration has failed to improve the lives of Ghanaians. The reason we vote in elections to choose leaders is because it will improve our lives. But in eight years, the NPP has set Ghana back ten years,” he said.
