The president of Ghana Athletics begs for El Wak Sports Stadium to be renovated.

El Wak Sports Stadium is in need of renovations, and the government has been encouraged to take action by Ghana Athletics President Bawah Fuseini.

His appeal comes at a time when the Stadium, which was once a center for sporting activities and athletics, is unable to accommodate events like the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games because of the deteriorating tracks.

Speaking at the 2024 SESSA Games opening ceremony, Fuseini expressed his dissatisfaction that the competition had to be moved to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, placing undue stress on the facility’s top-notch sports facilities.

Why aren’t we holding this at El Wak, we ask ourselves? It’s a result of the state of the track.

“We are pleading with the government to renovate El Wak and other institutions across the country through our board chairman and Acting Director General, Seth Panwun Boyoyo.

“El Wak and other stadiums will be used for domestic purposes, relieving pressure on the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, which will save its world-class tracks for international competitions,” he stated.

In order to promote the growth of athletics and other sports across the nation, Fuseini emphasized the significance of remodeling El Wak and other sports facilities.

“We request that the Ministry and government restore El Wak’s tracks, which serve as a central location for SESSA security services and athletics.

He went on, “Since SESSA covers a variety of disciplines outside athletics, renovating it will greatly enhance athletics and sports development nationwide.”

The need for improvements comes at a crucial moment when Ghana’s sporting facilities must be updated to match international standards and give athletes suitable training and competition spaces.
