Supreme Court Rejects Bagbin’s application

Supreme Court has rejected a petition by the Speaker of the Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who wanted to annul the court’s decision suspending his declaration of four vacant parliamentary seats.

The legal team for the Speaker argued that the Supreme Court has no jurisdiction in the case.

But after hearing the arguments of all parties, including the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice, the Supreme Court affirmed that its previous decision was spot on, stating that the appeal of the Speaker was not founded.

“We have examined the request and come to the conclusion that the reasons supporting the request have no value,” the Chief Justice said.

The Supreme Court also rejected an objection raised by Thaddeus Sory, an adviser to the Speaker regarding the appointment of Judge Ernest Gaewu.

Thaddeus Sory also argued that Justice Gaewu’s past role as a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary candidate suggested a potential conflict of interest.

However, the Supreme Court rejected this request.

This decision comes after the Court asked Parliament on October 18 that the four deputies continue their duties until the case is resolved, pending the statement of the Speaker of the Assembly on October 17.
