SSNIT celebrates legacy of service with mobile outreach in Koforidua

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) on Monday launched its 2025 Mobile Service Week in Koforidua, kicking off a nationwide outreach campaign aimed at improving access to social security services.

The initiative, themed “A Legacy of Service,” forms part of SSNIT’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

The anniversary celebrations run from October 20 to 24, 2025.

The week is featuring mobile service points at 59 locations across the country, complementing the Trust’s 53 permanent branches.

The Mobile Service is supported by the SSNIT Mobile App and USSD code *711*9#.

Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, the Director-General of the SSNIT, said the mobile service model was designed to bring services closer to workers and pensioners, reducing the need for long-distance travel to SSNIT offices.

“The Mobile Service Week reflects our continuous commitment to making social security accessible to all workers in Ghana. Instead of travelling long distances to our offices, members can now perform every SSNIT-related transaction at convenient locations near them,” he said.

Nationwide, SSNIT will provide registration and enrolment services for new workers and employers; benefits processing and status verification; renewal of Pensioner Certificates and Ghana Card-SSNIT number merger; and contribution and compliance services, including submission of contribution reports, validation, and statements of account.

Mr. Biney emphasized SSNIT’s role in safeguarding the welfare of contributors from their first day at work through retirement and beyond.

This includes lifetime pension payments, annual pension increases, invalidity pensions for members unable to work, and survivors’ benefits for loved ones in the event of a contributor or pensioner’s death.

He added that SSNIT also supports contributors’ health security by remitting 2.5 percent of their contributions to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cover healthcare premiums.

Speaking on the theme, Mr. Biney said: “When we talk of A Legacy of Service, we are referring to the many decades of consistent and dedicated service that SSNIT has provided to members, particularly pensioners in this country.”

He noted that every month, SSNIT pays pensions to over 256,000 retired men and women nationwide. As of October 2025, a total of GHS 5.19 billion had been paid for pensions and related benefits.
“These payments reflect the lives we touch, the dignity we uphold, and the trust we continue to build,” he stated.

Beyond benefits, SSNIT contributes significantly to nation-building through investments in key sectors such as energy, education, housing, and finance, driving growth, creating jobs, and strengthening Ghana’s economy.

To mark the 60th Anniversary edition of Mobile Service, SSNIT has introduced the Social Security Literacy Day, also known as the SSNIT Day of Reading.

The initiative aims to deepen social security education among young people through fun, interactive, and educational activities.

“By doing so, we are nurturing a generation with a strong sense of financial inclusion and a forward-thinking approach to retirement planning,” Mr. Biney said.

Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, the Eastern Regional Minister and Guest Speaker at the launch, commended the SSNIT’s staff for introducing the mobile service, which she said had removed one of the biggest barriers to participation, accessibility.

“Social security remains one of the most effective tools in the world that ensures economic stability and social justice. Through this Mobile Service Week, I hope many more artisans, traders, farmers, and small business owners here in the Eastern Region will take the bold step to register and secure their future,” she stated.

Daasebre Kwahu Boateng III, Paramount Chief of New Juaben Traditional Area, officially declared the Mobile Service Week launched.

The ceremony featured a drama performance to educate the public on the importance of enrolling with SSNIT to secure their future.
