Special Prosecutor announces plans to monitor Election 2024

In a strategic move to safeguard the integrity of the 2024 general elections, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has announced plans to deploy investigative operatives nationwide. The initiative aims to monitor, prevent, and address the falsification of election returns.

In the half-yearly report released on Thursday, July 11, 2024, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng stated, “The Office will deploy its covert and investigative operatives throughout the country before, during, and after the elections to monitor, suppress, and repress the falsification of returns at the elections.”

The OSP has issued a stern warning to Electoral Commission (EC) officers at polling stations, emphasizing the importance of accurate and transparent vote counts. Officers are cautioned that any willful falsification or false reporting of vote counts is a serious offence.

The OSP’s mandate includes ensuring the integrity of the elections through the prevention, detection, and prosecution of corruption, as outlined in the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959) and the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). This mandate empowers the OSP to maintain the sanctity of the electoral process.

With the 2024 general elections set for December 7, the OSP is committed to combating corruption, fraud, and unfair practices. The public is reminded that corruption, intimidation, and impersonation are prohibited by law, and any attempts to influence the election through such means will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.

The OSP also highlights the legal consequences for individuals found guilty of these offences, including a seven-year ban from voting in public elections and ineligibility for public office or election as President or Member of Parliament.
