Southampton have sacked manager Russell Martin after a 5-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, a result that left them bottom of the Premier League table.
The defeat was Southampton’s 13th in 16 league games this season, with all five goals conceded in a disastrous first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
With the club facing an uphill battle against relegation, the decision has been made to end Martin’s 18-month spell in charge.
Southampton have acknowledged Martin’s challenges but insist they must make immediate improvements.
“We all know we have to adapt to life in the Premier League before the start of the season,” the statement said. “However, the reality of our situation is clear and despite our support for Russell, results urgently need to improve. We are very grateful for the continued support and positivity of our fans. Your passion, even in the most difficult times, motivates us. our commitment to the long-term success of the club.”
The club also spoke of Martin’s contributions, including last season’s play-off triumph, thanking him and his staff for their commitment Southampton have appointed Under-21 coach Simon Rusk as interim manager while they search for a permanent replacement.
The club remains optimistic about the future, citing the development of young talent as one of its sources of strength and pride. The move comes on the same day that Wolves sacked Gary O’Neil after their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat.
