South African star Tyla makes history at 2024 MTV EMAs, celebrates afrobeats’ global influence

South African singer Tyla made history at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), winning three major categories: Best Afrobeats, Best African Act, and Best R&B. She surpassed notable artists, including Ayra Starr, DBN Gogo, and Diamond Platnumz, to claim the titles, marking her as the first African artist to win three awards in a single night at the EMAs.

In her acceptance speech at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena on November 10, Tyla expressed gratitude to her supporters and acknowledged the impact of Afrobeats on African music’s global reach. “Thank you to my team, my family, and the tigers for voting for me… Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music,” she said.

This recognition follows her success at the 2024 VMAs, where she showcased her Amapiano and Afrobeats-influenced hit, “Water,” further solidifying her position as a rising force in the international music scene.
