Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been knighted in the New Year’s Honours.
Southgate led England to the European Championship final and the 2018 World Cup semi-final, making him the most successful manager since Alf Ramsey.
Southgate, who stepped down shortly after England lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in July, became the fourth former England manager to receive a knighthood, following Ramsey, Walter Winterbottom and Bobby Robson.
Former Wales and British and Irish Lions winger Gerald Davies was also knighted. He was chairman of the Welsh Rugby Union. Nine-time Paralympic champion Hannah Cockcroft has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and Olympic 800m gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Stars of Britain’s Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic teams have been honoured.
Athletics stars Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who won her first Olympic medal with silver in the heptathlon in Paris, and triple medallist Dina Asher-Smith have been appointed MBEs.
Former Liverpool player Alan Hansen has been awarded an MBE and David Moyes, the recent West Ham manager, has been awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Dawn Astle, who set up the Jeff Astle Foundation to campaign for more research into head injuries in football in the name of her father, who died of dementia in 2002, has been made an MBE.
