Nigerian singer Simi has called on women to strive for financial independence, emphasizing that it can transform lives and boost their confidence.
In a TikTok video, the artist urged parents to raise children who value self-reliance and women who take charge of their financial well-being.
“Please do not raise your daughters to think that when they grow up, all they have to do is rely on someone else to take care of them,” Simi said.
She highlighted the importance of self-sufficiency, stating, “When someone spoils you, it shouldn’t be because you can’t spoil yourself. As they spoil you, spoil them too, and let them know you stand strong.”
Simi stressed that women’s economic power lies in their ability to support themselves, adding, “There is security in knowing that you’ve got yourself. A woman’s strength comes from fending for herself, being whole, and occupying her rightful space. You deserve good things.”
Reflecting on her upbringing, Simi acknowledged that her journey was shaped by supportive people and opportunities that gave her a head start. However, she also recognized that many women do not have similar privileges.
“I say this from a place of privilege. I grew up with people who believed in me, encouraged me, and gave me opportunities that brought me here. But some women have to do more with less—less love, less support, and fewer chances,” she said.
Simi appealed to society to uplift women with fewer opportunities, urging those in privileged positions to extend help where needed.
“When you have the chance to give a deserving woman an opportunity, please do,” she concluded.
