Shanghai Braces for Another Hit: Tropical Storm Pulasan Approaches

Just three days after Typhoon Bebinca brought Shanghai to a standstill, Tropical Storm Pulasan is heading towards the Chinese financial hub, threatening to unleash strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Pulasan grazed southern Japan early Thursday, triggering landslide warnings in Okinawa. With maximum sustained winds of 46 miles per hour, the slow-moving storm is expected to make landfall near Shanghai by Friday morning.

China’s National Meteorological Observatory has issued a severe weather alert, warning of potential floods and landslides. Local forecast offices near Shanghai have also sounded alarms, predicting up to two inches of rain per hour in some areas.

The storm’s trajectory suggests it may boomerang into the East China Sea after hitting eastern China, potentially affecting South Korea’s southern coast and Japan’s main islands. However, there’s also a chance it could dissipate in eastern China.

This latest threat comes on the heels of Typhoon Bebinca, which forced flight cancellations, tourist attraction closures, and transportation shutdowns in Shanghai. The typhoon damaged homes, felled over 10,000 trees, and flooded 800 acres of farmland, leaving at least two people dead in Kunshan.
