Rodrigo Bentancur has been banned for seven matches for making an offensive comment about South Koreans in relation to a remark about his Tottenham team-mate Son Heung-min.
The English Football Association said in a statement that an independent commission had also fined the player £100,000 ($126,000).
Appearing on Uruguayan television in June, Bentancur was asked for a Tottenham shirt and replied: “What about Sonny?” He added that he might as well be Soni’s cousin, because “more or less they are all the same.”
Bentancur apologized to Son on Instagram, saying it was “a very bad joke” and that he would “never disrespect him or hurt him”.
He was charged by the FA in September on suspicion of “acting inappropriately and/or using offensive and/or abusive language and/or disrespecting the game”.
The FA said it was a serious offense because it included “a reference to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin”.
