Responsible Miners Urge Government to Enforce Act 995

The Responsible Small-Scale Miners Association is calling on the Ghanaian government to enforce Act 995, a law that prohibits mining within 100 meters of water bodies. The association’s president, Philip Bawah, emphasized that irresponsible “galamsey” operators, not responsible small-scale miners, are causing environmental damage.

At a press conference, Bawah responded to calls for a blanket ban on mining, stating that such a move would be unfair to legitimate miners. Instead, he urged law enforcement agencies, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Minerals Commission to enforce the existing law.

The association pledged to cooperate with authorities to apprehend and prosecute rogue miners and advocated for training and support to enhance sustainable mining practices.

Vice president Daniel Kwaku Mensah pleaded with politicians not to politicize the issue, emphasizing the need for balanced regulation and enforcement that protects both the environment and the livelihoods of law-abiding miners.

The association’s call to action highlights the importance of responsible mining practices and the need for collaboration between government agencies, miners, and environmental stakeholders to address environmental concerns while preserving legitimate mining operations.
