Remembering Jerry John Rawlings: Four years on

The family and foundation of Ghana’s former President Jerry John Rawlings have released a statement to commemorate the fourth anniversary of his passing, honouring him as a warm, dedicated leader who devoted his life to the people of Ghana.

In a statement dated November 12, the family described Rawlings as a “patriotic leader committed to freedom, justice, and accountability for the ordinary man and woman.” The statement highlighted his dedication to African leadership principles and his call for leaders to genuinely serve their people.

Jerry John Rawlings, who passed away on November 12, 2020, at the age of 73, was hospitalized for a week at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital before his death. Born on June 22, 1947, Rawlings rose to prominence during a period of socio-economic crisis in Ghana, inspiring a political shift as a young Air Force fighter pilot committed to change.

His journey included leading the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) in 1979, chairing the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) from 1981 to 1992, and serving as the first President of Ghana’s Fourth Republic from 1992 to 2001. He also founded the National Democratic Congress, which remains one of Ghana’s major political parties.

The Rawlings family emphasized his lasting impact, noting his advocacy for social justice and courage in challenging injustices across Africa. Known as “The People’s Man,” Rawlings is remembered as a leader who willingly served the ordinary people, leaving a profound legacy that continues to inspire.
