Regional Maritime University appeals for support to construct classroom, hostel facilities

The Regional Maritime University (RMU) has appealed to stakeholders in the Maritime Industry to assist the University by constructing classroom and hostels to accommodate the constantly increasing students’ population.
Dr. Jethro W. Brooks, Acting Vice-Chancellor, RRMU said the demand for Maritime Education and Training (MET)
was gaining momentum among the public because of the employment opportunities available to meet graduates.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor made the appeal during the 19th Congregation of the University in Accra.
The graduation ceremony saw 372 students graduating with Master’s, Bachelor’s degrees and Diplomas in various fields. Of this number, 66 received Master’s degrees, 231 received Bachelor’s degrees and 52 diplomas.
Seventeen per cent of the undergraduates graduated with First Class honours, 49 per cent with Second Class Upper Division, and 27 per cent with Second Class Lower Division degrees.

Seventeen per cent and 44 per cent of the diploma candidates obtained Distinction and Second Class Upper Division respectively.
He said during the 2024/2025 admission sessions, the University experienced an increase in enrolment, especially female enrolment, into the sea-going programme.
Dr Brooks Jnr. said female enrolment into the sea-going programme increased to 99 students as against 35 during the 2023/2024 academic year.
He said overall the cadets’ regiment increased to 480 from 248.
The Vice-Chancellor said the Board had approved for the University to enter into agreement with any Estate Developer prepared to construct a hostel on build-operate-and transfer or build-and-jointly-operate basis or any other arrangement to the mutual benefit of the parties involved.
He said the University was grateful to the government and people of the Republic of Liberia for the construction of a two-storey student hostel that would be used next academic school year 2025/2026.
“We understand from the engineers that the foundation for that building can accommodate two additional floors,” he added.
He pleaded with the Liberian government to add the third and subsequently the fourth floor.
He advised the graduands to strive to be innovative in whatever they were trained in.
“As you go out to join the world of work, be good citizens, uphold high moral standards and saturate the environment in which you will live and work with the spirit of service, enterprise, and integrity,” he said.

Alhaji Fanday Turay, the Chancellor of RMU, said through the increasingly important and substantial research work of the University, it also helped in shipping and the wider maritime community towards the development of sustainable growth for the future.
He said the good work of the Regional Maritime University was only possible through a group of very generous donors and partners in various governments and certain sectors of the international maritime community.
He said the University would not be able to function without the financial support of a very dedicated core group of donors, who despite current budgetary constraints worldwide continued to support.
