Private Lotto Operators Get Greenlight: NLA Grants Licenses

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has granted licenses to 17 Private Lotto Operators (PLOs) in Ghana, marking a significant development in the country’s gaming industry. The licenses were announced at a press conference held at the NLA Headquarters in Accra on August 30, 2024.

The licensed PLOs include Alhapa Lotto Limited, Obiri Asare and Sons Company Limited, Zacdow Company Limited, and 14 others. While Rand Lotteries Company Limited and Alhapa Lotto Limited received 10-year licenses, the remaining 13 PLOs were granted two-year licenses, subject to renewal.

This move follows the NLA’s decision to temporarily halt its clampdown on PLOs over alleged illegal operations on August 14, 2024. After consultations between the NLA Board, Ghana Lotto Operators Association, and PLOs, a consensus was reached to sanitize the gaming industry.

NLA Board Chair, Gary Nimako Marfo, emphasized that the licenses provide a roadmap for PLOs to operate within the authority’s framework, complying with relevant regulations. He encouraged PLOs to protect their businesses by reporting illegal operators, stating that the NLA’s goal is to improve the industry and generate revenue.

Director-General Sammi Awuku vowed to flush out unlicensed and illegal operators, with enforcement efforts commencing in the coming weeks. The Ghana Lotto Operators Association expressed gratitude to the NLA for this significant development.

This move aims to regulate the gaming industry, ensuring compliance and revenue generation for the country.
