President John Dramani Mahama will be the Special Guest of Honour at the 65th anniversary celebration of the Ghana National Secondary School (GNASCO) in Tamale.

The climax of the School’s anniversary celebration is slated for Saturday, November 22, 2025.

The confirmation was made by Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, who announced the President’s attendance during parliamentary proceedings on Thursday.

His remarks followed a statement read on the floor of Parliament by Alhaji Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, MP for Tamale North, commemorating the milestone anniversary of the school.

In his contribution, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central and a proud alumnus of GNASCO, praised his alma mater for producing many legislators over the years.

He commended the school’s management for maintaining high academic standards and nurturing generations of leaders.

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, MP for Effutu, also highlighted the importance of celebrating public second-cycle education institutions and the dedication of public school teachers.

He noted that while many parents prefered private schools at the primary level, they often choose public secondary schools  because of the quality of teaching and academic excellence they provided.

This anniversary is not only marking 65 years of academic excellence but also celebrates GNASCO’s enduring role in shaping Ghana’s educational landscape and producing leaders across politics, academia, and public service.

GNASCO was established in 1960  by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Its original name was Ghana College as part of the Ghana Education Trust Schools initiative to accelerate national development by producing skilled human resources for Ghana’s industrial and technological growth.

The school was renamed Ghana Secondary School in June 1970.
