President John Dramani Mahama has received widespread praise from traditional leaders and local officials for the ongoing rehabilitation of the Ho–Aflao road under the Big Push initiative.
Commendations for the project echoed across several districts on the second day of the tour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s Thank You Tour of the Volta Region.
In the Agortime-Ziope District, the Konor of Agortime, Nene Nuer Keteku IV, expressed deep appreciation to President Mahama for fulfilling his promise to rehabilitate the Ho–Aflao highway, which passes through Agortime and Ziope.
At Ave-Dakpa in the Akatsi North District, the Paramount Chief, Togbui Nyamekor Glakpe V, also lauded the President for extending the project’s benefits to his area, describing it as a long-awaited development that would greatly enhance mobility and economic activities.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akatsi North, Mr Bless Kojo Katamani, joined in the commendation, noting that under the initiative, all adjoining roads linking the main Ho–Aflao stretch would also be upgraded.
In the Ketu North Municipality, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Rev. Martin Amenaki, highlighted that the Big Push Project was driving major infrastructural improvements, including the rehabilitation of the Afiadenyigba–Penyi, Penyi–Tokor, and Weta Junction–Metsrikasa roads.
He said these projects would significantly boost trade, agriculture, and access to markets within the municipality.
The Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu cautioned communities along the Ho–Aflao corridor against constructing unauthorized speed ramps on the road once completed.
He warned that such ramps were causing serious harm to motorists and patients transported by ambulances.
“The National Ambulance Service has complained that patients, particularly those with spinal injuries, suffer worsening conditions because of the numerous unapproved speed ramps,” he said.
Mr Gunu advised drivers to avoid over speeding, explaining that reckless driving was one of the main reasons some communities felt compelled to build their own ramps.
He disclosed that discussions were underway with the Ghana Highways Authority to include all adjoining routes connected to the Ho–Aflao road in the rehabilitation plan to ensure comprehensive access and connectivity.
When completed, the Ho–Aflao road project will enhance transportation and economic activities across six municipalities and districts—Ho Municipal, Adaklu District, Agortime-Ziope District, Akatsi North District, Ketu North Municipal, and Ketu South Municipal—positioning the Volta Region for stronger growth and regional integration.
