President Akufo-Addo defends NAPO’s record as Energy Minister

President Akufo-Addo has asserted that Ghana did not experience erratic power supply, commonly known as ‘dumsor,’ while Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, affectionately called NAPO, served as Energy Minister. This statement came during the official unveiling of NAPO as the vice-presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Despite public complaints and demands for a power rationing timetable, President Akufo-Addo praised NAPO’s management of the energy sector. “He managed the power sector well when I switched him from the Education Ministry to the Energy Ministry. We have not experienced any ‘dumsor’ under his leadership,” the President affirmed.

Reflecting on NAPO’s contributions, President Akufo-Addo highlighted his role as the director of elections for his 2012 campaign and his leadership in implementing the Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy. “In 2012, he was the director of elections for my campaign. I saw the gold in him. When I became president, I entrusted him with implementing the Free SHS. He has worked and delivered it diligently,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo also expressed confidence in the capabilities of the NPP’s presidential candidate, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and his running mate, NAPO. “I can testify to the competence of the pair. Bawumia was in the central bank working diligently. He has been loyal, straightforward, and an honest vice president,” he noted.

The President criticized the opposition, particularly former President John Dramani Mahama, for claiming credit for the Free SHS policy and for doubting the leadership potential within the NPP. “Whenever you want to do anything, he says it is not possible. This man has always spoken ill of the Free SHS policy; now he says he is the one who began implementing it,” Akufo-Addo retorted.

He also recalled Mahama’s earlier assertion that the NPP would never be led by a Northerner like Dr. Bawumia. “Mahama said a Northerner will never be a leader of the NPP. He told Bawumia he was being deceived. He is now ashamed. He will continue to be disgraced,” the President stated.

President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to turn out in large numbers on December 7 to ensure another mandate for the NPP. “I call on all Ghanaians to come out and vote massively to secure our victory,” he concluded.
