The police at Winneba in the Central Region, swiftly foiled an attempted robbery at the Winneba branch of the Mircrofin Rural Bank at Pomadze on Friday, August 15, 2025.
This happened when some masked armed men stormed the bank around 1:50 hours and tied up four security men at post.
The operation was, however, cut short when the Winneba Police Patrol team rushed to the scene upon a tip-off.
The Central Regional Police Command told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the armed men opened fire on the police, hitting the patrol vehicle but the officers were unscathed.
Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie, the Deputy Central Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO), said the police returned fire and the armed men escaped.
Spot investigations conducted at the bank premises found a cutting machine, a screwdriver, two empty BB cartridges spent shells, two iron bars, one saw blade, two sharp cutting plates, two new padlocks, a pump machine gun, cartridges and a set of door lockers.
The police also found that all entrances and exit doors of the bank had been broken by the robbers.
No money was taken from the bank due to early police response, Chief Ettie stated.
The Central Regional Police Command has assured the public and the people of Pomadze that the armed culprits would be apprehended to face the full rigours of the law, he said.
