Police Refute Claims of Returning Barker-Vormawor to Custody

The Ghana Police Service has categorically denied allegations that Oliver Barker-Vormawor, convener of the #FixTheCountry movement, was returned to police custody due to unpaid medical expenses. This clarification comes after widespread speculation and concerns raised by various groups, including Democracy Hub, organizers of the recent #StopGalamseyNow and #ReoccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrations.

In a statement released on Friday, October 11, the Ghana Police Service described the allegations as “palpable falsehoods” aimed at courting public sympathy. The Police emphasized that every cost associated with Barker-Vormawor’s hospital visit was borne by the Ghana Police Service, in line with their standard operating procedures regarding suspects in custody.

“We would like to emphasize that every cost associated with his visit to the hospital was borne by the Ghana Police Service in line with our Standard Operating Procedures regarding suspects in our custody,” the statement read.

However, the Police indicated that they are unable to share evidence regarding the medical expenses due to doctor-patient confidentiality. This restriction ensures that sensitive medical information remains private and protected.

The Police also disputed claims that Barker-Vormawor was rushed to the hospital, stating that this was another false assertion. This clarification aims to set the record straight and alleviate concerns surrounding Barker-Vormawor’s health.

Democracy Hub, organizers of the #StopGalamseyNow and #ReoccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrations, expressed grave concern over Barker-Vormawor’s health. In a press statement, the group noted that Barker-Vormawor was rushed to the Police Hospital earlier on Thursday, October 10, due to a serious health deterioration.

“We are gravely concerned for his well-being and urge the authorities to act swiftly in addressing his health needs,” Democracy Hub stated.

The group noted that medical professionals are currently conducting tests to assess Barker-Vormawor’s condition and determine whether hospitalization is necessary. Democracy Hub emphasized the gravity of the situation and urged the authorities to ensure that Barker-Vormawor receives the medical care he needs.

“This situation is critical, and we hope the authorities will respond with the urgency it demands,” the statement added.

The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to disregard these “baseless” claims related to this incident, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring Barker-Vormawor’s safety and well-being.

This development highlights the ongoing debate surrounding Barker-Vormawor’s detention and health. As the situation unfolds, concerns for his well-being continue to mount.
