Mr Felix Akakpo, popularly known as ‘Akonta’ an Accra-based businessman, has celebrated the achievements of 50 outstanding Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates and three exceptional educators in Ketu South.
For their awards, the BECE candidates – 40 from public schools and 10 from private schools across the Municipality, received an amount of GHS500, a chop box, trunk and a student mattress each, with the best 16 out of them receiving citations in addition.
For the educators, Madam Veronica Dzifa Zankoo and Mr Prosper Mensah, Head teachers of Border Basic and Denu Chicago Schools respectively, received a deep freezer each, while Mr Kafui Awudi-Larbie, the Head teacher of the Tublukope MA Basic School received a washing machine.
Mr Akakpo congratulated each of the awardees, saying their achievements were a testament to their perseverance, passion for learning, and their commitment to excellence, which were qualities that would serve them well, not only in their academic journey but also in life beyond school.
He promised that the award and donation package would be observed annually, to serve as a motivation for learners and teachers in the municipality to improve BECE performance, urging all stakeholders to continue working together, to nurture the potential of the youth and to build a brighter future for Ketu South.
“By investing in the education of our youth, we are not only shaping the future leaders of our community but also contributing to the development of our nation,” he said.
Mr Akakpo lauded teachers’ dedication and tireless efforts which he deemed as the backbone of the educational system while urging learners not to see education as a destination but a journey requiring perseverance, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and grow.
“I urge you to continue striving for excellence, to pursue your passions, and to never give up on your dreams. The world needs your energy, creativity, and talent,” he said.
Reverend Charles Elikplim Dorkenoo, the Public Relations Officer at the Municipal Education Directorate who represented Mr Godwin Amelor, the Municipal Education Director, thanked Mr Akakpo for his philanthropic gesture.
He said by deciding to invest in the future of our children, Mr Akakpo had demonstrated not only his love for education but also his commitment towards the progress of the Municipality and nation at large.
He stated that education was the surest legacy any society could give to its youth, and the gesture was indeed a great inspiration, adding that the Directorate saw the event as not just about the students but a call to all education stakeholders, to rededicate themselves to the noble cause of nurturing and guiding children.
Mr Nicholas Worclachie, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ketu South thanked Mr Akakpo who is also a youth chief (Torgbui Tenuvi II) of Aflao, and urged other well-meaning individuals to emulate his example, saying it was not always good to wait on the government for such initiatives.
Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Member of Parliament for the area congratulated the students and also pledged an additional GHS4,000 each for the top six and GHS500 each for the remaining 44 students.
The awardees pledged to make Mr Akakpo, Madam Gomashie, the Municipal Education Directorate and all three traditional areas in Ketu South – Aflao, Some and Klikor proud during their next three years in senior high school.
The event chaired by Torgbui Tortsofia Nyakeli VII, also saw Mr Amelor and Rev. Dorkenoo presented with citations for their unwavering support towards education in the municipality.
