People of Adaklu Kodzobi Share Divergent Views on Sunday’s Lunar Eclipse

Residents of Adaklu Kodzobi in the Adaklu District witnessed Sunday’s total lunar eclipse with excitement, curiosity, and a variety of interpretations across generations.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow on the moon’s surface. Often referred to as the “red moon,” the phenomenon left many residents in awe.
For some, it was a thrilling new experience. Miss Mildred Nyatsikor, a level 200 student of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Hohoe campus, told the Ghana News Agency that it was her first time witnessing such an event.
“I was marvelled and excited by the occurrence. I was surprised by the accurate prediction and I’m eager to see the next one, which is expected in August 2026,” she said.

Another student, Master Oscar Deh, admitted that he initially doubted the predictions but was convinced after the sighting.
“I now believe such natural phenomena occur, and I will be thrilled to see the upcoming total eclipse next year,” he remarked.

An octogenarian, who preferred to remain anonymous, recalled that in the past, eclipses and even morning rainbows were considered bad omens.
“In those days, rituals had to be performed, including the beating of war and fontofrom drums,” he said, adding that many older people still hold on to such beliefs.
For others, the event carried spiritual meaning. Elder Cephas Agbati of the Church of Pentecost, Adaklu Kodzobi Assembly, described the eclipse as “a sign of the greatness and awesomeness of God, the creator and ruler of the universe.”

He explained that the Bible foretold such occurrences, citing Joel 2:31: “The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon to blood before the great and awesome day of the Lord.”

Elder Agbati also referenced similar passages in Isaiah 13:9–11, Matthew 24:29, Mark 13:24, and Revelation 6:11, noting that such events signal the imminent return of Jesus Christ.

Shared wonder
While interpretations differed—from scientific awe to traditional caution and biblical prophecy—the eclipse united the community under the night sky, reminding many of the mysteries and marvels of nature.
