Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, the Paramount Chief of Wenchi Traditional Area in the Bono Region at the weekend urged the youth in the area to support and improve sanitation in the area.
He said youth played an integral role in ensuring a clean environment and stemming the outbreak of communicable diseases.
Osagyefo Tabrako III said the Traditional Council in collaboration with the Wenchi Municipal Assembly had launched a sanitation campaign to keep the municipality clean, saying improved sanitation remained his priority as a paramount chief.
The Paramount Chief gave the advice in an interview with the media on the sidelines of a clean-up exercise organised by the Wenchi Municipal Assembly.
Osagyefo Tabrako III indicated that keeping the environment clean remained a collective responsibility, explaining that the campaign was in line with government efforts aimed at improving waste management and sanitation in the country.
He highlighted the relevance of hygiene, saying, “proper hygiene is the foundation for progress as it improves human health and development.”
He added that the Traditional Council was collaborating with the Assembly to enact and enforce sanitation byelaw to keep the area clean.
“The municipality can’t progress without bye-laws”, he stated adding that a taskforce would be set up to enforce the sanitation bye-law.
Ms Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, the Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive, urged all stakeholders to also support the sanitation campaign.
She said: “Beyond the clean-up exercise, the Assembly is taking steps to ensure that all households have waste bins too.
“Our goal is to ensure that all public places and households have waste bins to prevent littering and indiscriminate dumping of waste and refuse.”
The participants clear choked gutters, clean the Wenchi Thursday Market, the old market, Jubilee Park and the principal streets of the town.
