Opera Square Traders Fight Back Against Sudden Eviction by Accra Metropolitan Assembly

A contentious standoff has unfolded between traders at Opera Square Metro and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) over the latter’s abrupt decision to evict the traders without prior notice. The traders, who received a letter from AMA demanding their departure within a week, are resisting the move, citing the market as their sole source of income.

Background to the Dispute

The traders, who have been operating at Opera Square for years, were shocked to receive a letter from AMA ordering them to vacate the premises by tomorrow. The letter also stipulated that traders must obtain permits by Wednesday, July 31st, 2024, or face complete removal of their shops for non-compliance.

The traders argue that AMA’s actions are unlawful, as they were not provided with prior notice of the plans to demolish and sell the land. Elizabeth Kankam, a trader, expressed frustration, stating, “They should have informed us or provided alternative arrangements. Where are we supposed to go? We have nowhere else to go.”

The traders also contend that the market is their primary source of income, enabling them to support their families and pay school fees. They fear that the eviction will leave them without a means of livelihood.

AMA, however, maintains that the eviction is necessary to make way for a new development project. According to officials, the traders have been given ample notice and must comply with regulations or face the consequences.

The traders have vowed to resist any attempts to demolish their stores, warning that they will take action against anyone or group involved in the eviction process. “We won’t sit back and allow anyone to demolish our stores. We demand that the AMA chief executive explains why they’re attempting to build without our consent. We will not tolerate any further action without our input.”
