NPP’s Boycott Decision Bad for Ghana – ACEPA Director

Dr. Rasheed Draman, Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), has expressed concerns over the timing of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. This move has sparked intense debate and heightened tensions, especially with Ghana’s upcoming elections on the horizon.

The affected MPs are Cynthia Mamle Morrison (NPP, Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (NPP, Suhum), Peter Kwakye-Ackah (NDC, Amenfi Central), and Andrew Amoako Asiamah, an independent MP from Fomena who recently rejoined the NPP. Speaker Bagbin’s decision was prompted by accusations that these MPs breached constitutional provisions.

Dr. Draman questioned the timing of this significant ruling, considering its potential consequences for the political landscape and parliamentary operations. While acknowledging the legal framework allows for declaring vacant seats, he emphasized the need for careful handling and deliberation.

“I think the right thing is what their [the Majority] leader has said they have done. They will seek the interpretation of the court. I will appeal for cool heads for the Supreme Court to make pronouncements,” Dr. Draman stated.

The NPP Minority has announced a boycott of parliamentary proceedings until the Supreme Court delivers its judgment. Dr. Draman urges against this, stating it’s not in Ghana’s interest, especially during election preparations. He advocates for calm and respecting the Supreme Court’s decision to improve Ghana’s democracy.
