NPP Promises Empowerment for Small-Scale Miners, Not Ban

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has assured small-scale miners that the party will empower them to engage in responsible mining, rather than banning their operations. He made this promise during a campaign event in Manso Adubia constituency, Ashanti Region, where he highlighted the distinction between responsible and illegal mining practices that harm forests and water bodies.

Key Initiatives:

– Establishment of a Minerals Development Bank: to provide financial support to the mining sector and promote sustainable growth
– Community Mining Scale: to introduce responsible mining practices at the community level
– Support for Lawful Mining Operations: instead of banning illegal mining, the NPP government will implement measures to support lawful operations

Dr. Opoku Prempeh also emphasized the NPP’s track record in economic growth, particularly in the agricultural sector. He cited Ghana’s highest-ever cocoa production of over one million metric tonnes during the 2020/2021 crop season as an example of the government’s strategic investment and prioritization of key industries.

NPP’s Vision:

– Manage Ghana’s mineral resources to benefit the people and drive economic growth without harming the environment
– Promote responsible mining practices through collaboration with the private sector

The party’s vision, as shared by Dr. Opoku Prempeh, aligns with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s initiative to establish a Minerals Development Bank. This bank will play a vital role in supporting sustainable growth in the mining industry.

By empowering small-scale miners and promoting responsible mining practices, the NPP aims to strike a balance between economic growth and
environmental protection.
