The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will re-run the Walewale parliamentary primary on Sunday, September 8, 2024, following the annulment of the previous results by the Tamale High Court. The court’s decision was made due to irregularities, impersonation, and over-voting in the initial election.
In a press statement, the NPP’s General Secretary outlined the approved timelines for the re-run, which include:
– Opening of nomination: Tuesday, September 3, 2024
– Nomination closure: Thursday, September 5, 2024
– Election: Sunday, September 8, 2024
Aspirants are required to obtain nomination forms by paying a non-refundable application fee of GH¢3,000 and a non-refundable filing fee of GH¢35,000. However, women, youth, and persons with disabilities will receive a 50% rebate on the filing fees.
The statement also clarified that those who participated in the previous primary election and paid the filing fees are not required to pay again. The election committee members have been named as Alhaji Haruna Mohammed (Chairman), Alhaji Nurudeen Fuseini (Vice Chairman), Hajia Safia Mohammed (Member), Evans Nimako (Secretary), and the Chairperson of the Constituency Council of Elders and all Constituency Executives (Ex-Officio Members).
The initial primary election was held in January, where Dr. Kabiru Mahama narrowly defeated Hajia Lariba. However, the incumbent Member of Parliament challenged the results in court, citing electoral irregularities and malpractice, leading to the annulment of the results and the subsequent re-run.
