She secured the seat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a closely fought election.
The NDC candidate garnered 34,090 votes, while the NPP’s Akua Afriyie received 33,881 votes.
Ewurabena Aubynn expressed to reporters, “We anticipated this win because we put in so much effort.”
This victory marks the first time in the Fourth Republic that the NDC has captured the seat after years of NPP’s political dominance.
The rerun was necessitated by a lengthy dispute regarding the initial parliamentary results from December 2024, where violence at the collation center disrupted the counting of votes from 19 polling stations.
A High Court subsequently instructed the Electoral Commission (EC) to finalize the results, but after several months of delays and security issues, the Commission decided to hold a rerun in the affected regions.
The rerun election witnessed a considerable turnout, with over 6,000 voters anticipated to participate.
While the process was largely smooth at most polling centers, there were reports of isolated violence in certain areas of the constituency.
Tensions heightened at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, part of the Ablekuma North constituency.
The electoral rerun was violently interrupted when a group of unidentified “macho men” invaded the area in a coordinated attack, arriving in a pickup truck accompanied by several motorbikes, instilling fear among voters, electoral officials, and security personnel.
Witnesses reported that the attackers overpowered the security presence and assaulted several political figures, including former MP and ex-Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.
Disturbing video evidence shows her being forced to the ground and allegedly kicked in the chest and groin area before law enforcement intervened.
Other individuals affected included NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female party representative, both reportedly injured during the chaos.
Later that morning, a journalist from JoyNews was slapped and shoved by an assailant.
Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, the Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was attacked by a group at the St. Peter’s Polling Station in Odorkor.
In response, former Vice President and NPP presidential contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, condemned the violent events that occurred during the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.
