Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has disclosed that his campaign staff disagreed with his choice to accept defeat in the election held on December 7.
In order to maintain the country’s peace and stability, Dr. Bawumia decided to accept the result early despite their misgivings.
On December 8, just a few hours after the vote-counting process had begun, Dr. Bawumia declared his concession.
His choice was made prior to the results being formally announced by the Electoral Commission.
With 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of the total valid votes cast, John Dramani Mahama was declared the election’s victor by the Commission on December 9.
Speaking to a group of party members at his home on Thursday, December 26, Dr. Bawumia explained why he decided to make the concession so quickly.
He emphasized that his dedication to upholding Ghana’s democratic values and making sure the nation remained calm served as the basis for the decision.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the country’s overall well-being by saying, “The stability of Ghana must always come first.”
Additionally, the NPP flagbearer expressed gratitude to his followers for their steadfast commitment during the campaign.
He exhorted them to hold fast to their faith in the party’s principles and to keep striving for a more powerful and cohesive Ghana.
Some members of my staff were saying, “You can’t go out and concede, we don’t know if all this data is right, let’s wait,” despite the fact that the Electoral Commission had not yet declared [the winner]. However, I pointed out that our own system confirms that this data is accurate.
“You know, so if you wait, you build up more tension and violence could come because of the message that was coming, which was that we were trying to rig the election.”
“However, no one has ever conceded an election without the EC making a public announcement, and I stated that everything happens for the first time.”
