As part of efforts to empower young people with employable skills, MTN Ghana has presented certificates and start-up tools to 12 trainees, who successfully completed a training programme in mobile phone repairs at its Nyinahini Data Center in the Atwima Mponua District.
The initiative forms part of the telecom giant’s annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care programme, a staff volunteerism campaign, aimed at uplifting communities through skills training and development.
During a visit to the training centre, MTN staff and officials interacted with the trainees and observed the practical skills they had acquired.
Each participant received a toolkit to enable them to set up their own businesses and become self-reliant.
Mr. Charles Osei Akoto, Head of Technical for MTN’s Northern Business District, said the 21 Days of Y’ello Care initiative continued to make a lasting impact by supporting youth development and entrepreneurship.
He said mobile phones had become part of human life, hence equipping young people with phone repair skills was a lasting investment in the youth.
“We have provided them with all the tools they need so that right from the training they find a place and start helping the community,” he stated.
This year, the company has extended support to communities like Nyinahini and Asokwa, focusing on practical skills such as phone repairs and fashion design and the goal is to equip beneficiaries with what they need to earn a living.
Mr. Abdul-Karim Awudu, who led the phone repair sessions, said the trainees were taken through ethics of the job and also exposed to the various tools used for repairing mobile phones.
They were equipped with hands-on lessons in identifying phone faults, component replacements, and basic software troubleshooting.
Mr. Peter Bonsu, one of the beneficiaries, spoke about how they came for the training with little to no knowledge in phone repairs but now equipped with skills to fix various phone issues.
He applauded MTN Ghana for empowering them to be self-employed in an era of limited job opportunities.
The 21 Days of Y’ello Care programme has been running since 2007, and MTN staff across the country continue to volunteer their time and resources to support skills development, education, and digital literacy in underserved communities.
