Mona Gucci acquitted in ghc103,400 visa fraud case

Mona Gucci known in real life as Monalisa Abigail Semeha has been acquitted and discharged by an Accra Circuit Court after being accused of defrauding a trader of GHC103,400.

Mona Gucci, a Travel and Event Consultant, was alleged to have collected the amount in February 2019 to secure American visas for clients of the complainant, Comfort Obiri, but failed to deliver. She pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretences.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong, called three witnesses to testify. However, Mona Gucci’s defences team filed a submission of no case, arguing that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against her.

The court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, ruled in favour of the defences, stating that the matter was a civil dispute that had gone sour rather than a criminal offense.

The prosecution alleged that in February 2019, Comfort Obiri, the complainant, was introduced to Mona Gucci by a mutual acquaintance, Esther, as someone capable of securing United States visas. Mona Gucci reportedly assured the complainant she could obtain the visas at a cost of GHC40,000 each.

The complainant subsequently introduced three individuals to Mona Gucci for visa facilitation. According to the prosecution, Mona Gucci collected a total of GHC103,400 from them under the pretence of securing the visas but failed to deliver and did not refund the money as promised.

In his ruling, the judge emphasized that the case lacked criminal elements and was instead a contractual matter that had turned problematic. The court thus acquitted and discharged Mona Gucci of all charges.
