Award-winning singer Mariah Carey is grieving the loss of two close family members, as her mother and estranged sister both passed away on the same day over the weekend, TMZ reported.
The 55-year-old singer’s mother, Patricia Carey, was an opera singer, while Mariah had been estranged from her sister Alison at the time of her death. The “All I Want for Christmas” singer shared the devastating news in a heartfelt statement.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Mariah expressed. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
The causes of death for both Patricia and Alison were not disclosed at the time of this report. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the Grammy award-winner detailed her “complicated” relationship with her mother, describing it as a “prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment.” Despite their tumultuous relationship, Mariah emphasized that the bond with her mother endured, and she would never stop loving her.
The relationship between Mariah and her sister was reportedly strained, and the two were estranged. In 2021, Alison filed a lawsuit against Mariah, claiming emotional distress over allegations made in the singer’s memoir.
Mariah Carey was born to Patricia and Alfred Roy Carey, an aeronautical engineer. Her father, who passed away in 2002, was of African-American and Afro-Venezuelan descent. In her memoir, Mariah revealed that her mother’s family disowned her for marrying a Black man. Her parents divorced when she was three years old.
