Mohamed Salah says he refuses to be distracted by uncertainty over his future as he focuses on having an “exceptional season” to achieve his goal of winning the Premier League again with Liverpool.
The Egyptian forward is in the final six months of his contract and has said he is still “a long way” from agreeing a new deal with the club.
But Salah leads the Premier League in goals and assists, with 17 and 13 respectively, after helping Liverpool move six points clear.
And he told Sky Sports: “What I think is, if this is the last six months, what do you want to see in the future? Would you look back and say you were worried or stressed about the contract? Or do you mean I had an incredible season? That’s what I mean.
“If I ever feel down, I just remember that I want to look back and say I had an incredible season. That’s what I want to do.”
Salah is in line to sign a pre-contract agreement to join a foreign club this summer, but the 32-year-old has indicated he wants to stay at Anfield.
However, while talks with the club have been ongoing, he said: “There’s nothing, we’re far from any progress, so we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Salah has scored 231 goals for Liverpool since joining from Roma in 2016, winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League the following year. But the lockdown prevented Liverpool from celebrating their home triumph at a packed Anfield, and Salah revealed that he made winning the English title his main goal last summer.
“I’ve got some time off, I’m going to be with my family, I’m going to see my parents, then a day or two to write down my goals for the season,” Salah added.
“The first one on the list was to win the Premier League with Liverpool; I always say the Champions League, but this is the first time I’ve said I really want to win the Premier League with Liverpool. Maybe because we haven’t celebrated what we’ve won with the club as much as we want to.
“And coming back here, it’s my last year at the club and I want to do something special for the city. “We’ve been waiting for this title for about 30 years, we won it when there was a pandemic at that time. We didn’t have time to celebrate properly. Hopefully we can do it this year.”
