Ghanaian Highlife artist Kwabena Kwabena has expressed his concerns over the lack of accountability Ghanaians demand from their leaders, which he believes is a major factor contributing to the country’s current challenges.
During an appearance on United Showbiz on UTV on September 7, 2024, Kwabena Kwabena highlighted that politicians frequently make grand promises during election campaigns but often fail to deliver once in office. He argued that this cycle persists because voters do not hold these leaders accountable, allowing them to repeat the same behavior in future elections.
“Since we began practicing democracy in 1992, if we had held politicians accountable for the promises in their manifestos, we wouldn’t be in this situation,” Kwabena Kwabena stated. “Politicians come with big promises, and after we vote for them, they don’t fulfill these promises. Because no one holds them accountable, they get away with it and do the same thing in the next election cycle.”
He added, “Every four years, we hear all these big promises, but after voting them into power, we complain of hardships. I feel like we are our own problem.”
Kwabena Kwabena’s remarks come at a time when there is growing public dissatisfaction with governance in Ghana. Citizens have been protesting against economic hardships, the rising cost of living, abuse of power, corruption, and inadequate infrastructure, all while demanding greater accountability and change from their leaders.
