Hon. Samuel Payne, Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, has emphasized the need to empower women to assume leadership roles in governance. He stressed that inclusivity and equity in governance can only be achieved by involving women in all aspects of decision-making.
Citing the population and housing census conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service, Hon. Payne noted that women constitute the majority of the population, making their participation in decision-making crucial. He acknowledged that women possess the wisdom and knowledge to govern effectively, just like their male counterparts.
Hon. Payne made this call during a town hall meeting organized by the African Women Leadership Network Ghana Chapter (AWLN) at the CLOSAG Hall. The meeting aimed to promote women’s political leadership through dialogue, with a focus on the upcoming December 7th general elections.
Dr. Charity Binka, Chairperson of AWLN Ghana Chapter, highlighted the low participation of women in politics and emphasized the need to increase their representation in parliament. She noted that research revealed that women who advocate for women’s participation in politics often fail to vote for female candidates. Dr. Binka urged the public to support women who courageously contest elections, ensuring they do not feel isolated in their pursuit of leadership roles.
