Kaywa was only grooming us for success – Keche declares

Ghanaian music duo Keche have opened up about their formative years under the guidance of their mentor, renowned sound engineer Kaywa. Initially, they believed Kaywa was mistreating them, but they later realized he was grooming them for success.

During an interview on Neat FM on July 22, 2024, Keche credited Kaywa for instilling discipline and a strong work ethic in them during their early years. They recalled the rigorous routine they endured, often walking from Community One to Community Eleven to reach Kaywa’s studio and spending the entire day there.

Their six-year period as “studio boys” enabled them to master their musical skills, allowing them to remain relevant to this day.

“At that time, when we were under him, we used to think he was mistreating us, but now we’ve realized that he was actually grooming us. He was trying to instill the spirit of discipline in us.

“I can’t count the number of times we walked from Community One to Community Eleven to his studio. We would be there the whole day and sometimes not get home until 2 am.

“We were there as studio boys for six years. Nowadays, there’s no longer the concept of a studio boy, as people have access to the internet and laptops to create music, but we had to go through that process. If Keche is still here, it’s not just about talent, but also about hard work. We went through the process,” they said.

They expressed gratitude for the discipline and work ethic instilled in them by Kaywa, acknowledging that his strict approach was aimed at honing their strengths and improving their weaknesses.

“He is strict, but it’s all for the best. That’s why we are still relevant today. We have been through it.

“We would go through that experience again because we can see the value in it,” they added.
