John Mahama Secures Comeback: Declared winner of Ghana’s 2024 Presidential election

Former President John Dramani Mahama has been officially declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, marking a historic return to power after a highly competitive race.

The Electoral Commission (EC) announced Mahama’s victory on Monday, December 9, confirming he secured 6,328,397 votes, accounting for 56.55% of valid votes cast. His closest rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahama’s party, also achieved a commanding parliamentary majority, clinching over 160 seats. Notably, the NDC gained key constituencies traditionally dominated by the NPP, solidifying Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to lead the nation once more.

With a voter turnout of 60.9%, the election process was largely peaceful despite isolated incidents of violence and logistical challenges in areas like Damongo, Ablekuma Central, and Okaikwei North.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia delivered a gracious concession speech, urging his supporters to respect the outcome. “We have fought a good fight. The people have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” he said, calling for unity as Ghana moves forward.

Mahama is expected to address the nation soon, laying out his vision for the country as he prepares to begin his second term on January 7, 2025.

The election has been praised by both local and international observers for its transparency and credibility, despite logistical hurdles.

Mahama’s return to the presidency, after defeats in 2016 and 2020, marks a significant political shift. The success of the NDC in both the presidential and parliamentary races strengthens his position as he takes on the challenges of governance in the coming years.
